I hope you're not going to completely give up on drawing. If you want to be a good animator, drawing is an essential skill. Anyone can take someone else's characters, but to actually make something from scratch sets you apart from the copycats. Sprite animations are good when you're just beginning, but solely for getting the hang of animation itself.
The best thing you can do is practice your drawing. Use the internet; there are so many resources out there to help you improve yourself.
